As I approach my second-degree black belt in martial arts, I've reflected on what it means to be a Hongik leader. The term Hon gik, meaning "benefit the world," embodies true leadership. A Hongik leader doesn't focus on personal power but on helping others and making a positive impact. They lead with compassion, humility, and a commitment to empowering those around them.
The main difference between a Hongik leader and a traditional one is the focus on service rather than authority. A Hongik leader values empathy, continuous growth, and integrity, knowing that leadership is about learning from experiences and supporting others in their journey. They understand that leadership is not about being perfect, but about growing together and creating lasting positive change. A Hongik leader's influence extends far beyond themselves, fostering a community where everyone feels supported and inspired to improve.
This is the kind of leadership I strive to embody in both my martial arts journey and in life.
